Please donate a pumpkin or squash to the patch.

The gardener, who is also a professional chef will make Madeira squash soup with roasted mushrooms and Pumpkin-pine nut crumble with ricotta mousse and maple syrup and donate them to the women's shelter on Lafayette Street for Thanksgiving.

So place your pumpkin or settle your squash right here and we’ll make sure it reaches its destination in all its delicious, transmogrified glory!

Thank you!

The pumpkin patch project started as a whim. I credit or blame my English background with the passion I have for the intimate landscapes of the small, closely tended gardens.

To the dismay of the plant-addicted among us, there comes a time when Mother Nature will not support our habit of more plants, more flowers, more beauty. What to do? I could not allow my postage stamp New York City street gardens to run to ruin with cigarette butts, wafting trash and dog-trammelling just because the festively blooming annuals die and the stalwart trees and perennials ‘hibernate’ until the next spring.

They were at every stall in the Greenmarket: pumpkins, squashes, gourds. Of course – the vegetable sculpture garden! But clearly I could not just collect and discard. Waste is an alien and toxic force against nature.

We would cook whatever we gathered and feed those who would appreciate and enjoy it: those who have no gardens; who perhaps have no kitchens; who perhaps have little food and less love.

We are donating the resulting dishes to a very local shelter in the hope that the pumpkin patch will bring a small, closely tended caring to those we care about, though we may never have met.
